Model Hubby

When M.H. was young, he often dreamed of having a marriage like his parents…two strong independent adults who definitely add greater meaning to each others’ lives while still maintaining their unique interests and differences. That dream was put on hiatus after M.H. came to terms with his sexuality as a senior in high school and came out to his family as a gay man. From that point, marriage didn’t even seem like a possibility, since same-sex couples couldn’t get married. Plus, America’s skyrocketing divorce rate, not to mention the highly publicized celebrity marriages/quickie divorces convinced M.H. that maybe the “sacred institution of marriage” was not all it was cracked up to be.

Then, like most classic love stories, M.H. met the man he didn’t even realize he’d been dreaming about. And after 5 years, M.H. surprised all his friends and the Man of His Dreams (MOHD) by proposing marriage while the two were vacationing. At a ceremony in front of both of their families and friends, the two exchanged vows, served cupcakes and celebrated their commitment to each other.  Washington, DC gave the couple its best post-non-legal-wedding ceremony gift ever by legalizing marriage rights for same-sex couples a few short months later.

Now M.H. and the MOHD are navigating the world of being newlyweds. And M.H. is learning what it means to be a loving supporting husband, while trying to still find the humor in coordinating schedules, making long term plans, trying to launch a budding model career and trying to get his hubby to understand that when M.H. sleeps in till 11 on a Saturday, that is not a cardinal sin.
